Good shopping is the key to good eating for you and your family

  1. Avoid foods that come in a box or in a plastic bag. You will be stunned how many processed foods you will eliminate from your diet.
  2. Focus on foods that grow in the ground or on trees. You might expect that this is an expensive way to shop, but when you compare the overall cost of five pounds of apples (approximately $3) to a bag of chips (approximately $3) or cookies (approximately $3), you will be surprised that feeding your family healthy food does not have to be more expensive.
  3. Choose meats that are on sale (assuming that you are not a vegetarian). When you consider that an entire chicken costs about $6, you will realize that you will be providing your family a protein packed meal for approximately $1.50 per person.
  4. Make a list at home, and stick to your list!
  5. Finally, try to only eat food that you prepare at home. Not only will it save you money, but you will know the ingredients that you are adding to the food—a vital set of facts that will help you to control the caloric content of your meal.
  6. The very first line of defense in managing your weight is eating the healthiest food that you can. Bon Appétit!
